Stopping power at the front comes courtesy of potent six-piston calipers gripping lightweight, carbon-carbide 14-inch discs. Strangely enough, however, Audi couldn't be bothered to upgrade the rear brakes, which are straight from the production model. At least the brakes aren't drums.

Audi also equipped with A3 Clubsport with a stiff sport suspension that reduces the ride height by 1.42 inches and fitted it with the automaker's drive select driving dynamics system and magnetic ride adaptive damper control to maximize handling when necessary and ride comfort when not.

Visually, the car's goal is simple: Get attention. This it accomplishes well, for better or worse. The white-and-red paint scheme is eye catching, especially the No. 8 on the side. It's also hard to miss the giant front grille that brings memories of the Q7 V12 TDI Concept from the 2007 Detroit Auto Show or the massive honeycombs in the lower fascia. The rear fascia features two giant exhaust pipes that Audi says generate a "sonorous soundtrack," and there's a DTM-style spoiler mounted on the rear window. Rounding out the exterior changes are flared doors and quarter panels, Xenon headlights with LED running lights, bolt-on wheelarch extensions, and 20-inch, 10-spoke wheels.

The interior didn't undergo the same radical transformation as the exterior. The most notable changes over the standard A3 are the racing-style sport bucket seats, TDI Power-badged illuminated door sills, aluminum shiftgate, and a flat-bottomed steering wheel. The door panels and floormats also have been redesigned.

The result is that the A3 Clubsport weighs in at 3252 lb, is 0.63 in. longer than a standard 166.85-in.-long three-door A3, sits 1.42 in. lower with a height of 54.53 in., and boasts a wider track -- 61.73/61.14 in. front/rear, increases of 1.34 and 1.81 in., respectively. And it would fit in perfectly parked at a funny angle at a late-night enthusiast meet.

While I don’t believe for one second that Microsoft has given up on Windows Mobile, Apple has certainly raised the bar, and Microsoft will need to step up to the plate on a number of levels and execute a series of dramatic enhancements to their own platform.

My final thought is to make sure you don’t forget Windows Mobile. Unlike the iPhone, it’s not just a smartphone; it’s a robust platform for enterprise applications. In fact, it’s the mobile platform that Apple uses in their retail stores to process sales of iPhones, using Windows Mobile-powered Symbol/Motorola handhelds.
In the end, if iPhone sales go up, Microsoft makes money on the Exchange Server licenses. If they go down, Microsoft makes money on Windows Mobile.

Sprint’s new Samsung ACE is a more powerful version of the BlackJack II.

Sprint is now offering the new Samsung ACE, a souped-up and slightly redesigned version of Samsung’s second generation BlackJack smartphone. From the front of the device, it’s a little difficult to tell the ACE and BlackJack II apart. But there’s a world of difference under the hood.

slim, sleek world phone
The ACE is a true world phone, with CDMA and GSM network capability. In the U.S. it connects to Sprint’s CDMA network. Outside the U.S. you can slip a SIM card into a slot under the battery and use it on almost any international wireless network. The ACE is a small and attractive Windows Mobile Standard device that’s easy to carry around with you in your pocket or purse. Like many other Windows Mobile smartphones these days, it has a QWERTY thumb keyboard below the display. What sets the ACE apart from its competitors is its very thin, sleek profile. Ergonomically designed for one-handed operation, I found the device very comfortable to use as a phone and data device. Its candy bar form factor, 5-way navigation button, and thumb wheel make it perfect for onehanded operation. Other features include Bluetooth 2.0, push e-mail capabilities, and good call quality. Astute cellular shoppers will notice that the Sprint ACE bears a striking resemblance to AT&T’s BlackJack II. They’re essentially the same device with cosmetic and internal changes. Sprint customers will also enjoy a faster processor than its AT&T brother has. The ACE uses Qualcomm’s 312 MHz processor instead of the BJ II’s 260 MHz TI chip. This additional speed helps the ACE do an adequate job as a tiny road warrior. The ACE’s body is also thinner than the BJ II, making it easier to hold, especially if you have small hands. The 2.3-inch screen is well suited for watching Sprint TV, one of my favorite Sprint features. The ACE’s controls consist of two soft keys, a shortcut to the Today or Home screen, a Back button, Talk and End keys, and a square four-way directional D-pad with a select button situated in the middle. The BJ II’s rounded four-way D-pad is slippery and less comfortable to use than the ACE’s. The left and right soft keys “toggle” with the Home and Back key using a concave curve, giving the user the illusion and feel of two separate keys. The D-pad, in between the two “togglers,” is slightly elevated and has more space for scrolling up, down, left, and right without inadvertently activating the surrounding buttons. A microSD expansion slot is located on the upper-right side and is protected by an attached cover. Immediately below the microSD slot is a thumbwheel, which can be pressed to select items, and a second Back button below it. The thumbwheel makes it easy to scroll up and down when reading long documents or surfing the Web. Having the Back button near the thumbwheel lets you quickly escape from the current menu or applications. This combination of the thumbwheel and Back button enhances the one-handed experience. In addition, if you firmly hold down the thumbwheel for a few seconds, it brings up a “quick launcher.” This convenient feature lets you open several applications including the Alarm, Task Manager, Calendar, and Edit features. The Edit features allow users to program applications into this cool additional Thumbwheel feature. In addition, when you press and hold the side “Back” button, it activates the camera. The keys on the full QWERTY keyboard are slightly peaked in the center (like a roof), which makes text entry an easier and more enjoyable experience. The backlit keys make the device well suited for typing in dark or dim areas. The keys are a bit crowded, however, making it more difficult to type if your thumbs are larger than average.
The number buttons are placed in rows 3, 4, & 5 and stand out against the non-numeric black keys due to their gray color. The function key acts as a “NUM Lock” for multiple numeric entries. The left side of the ACE contains the rocker volume control and covered power/USB sync/headphone adapter. Unfortunately, Samsung has included yet another proprietary adaptor port. I truly wish there could be industry standardization when it comes to power, sync, and charging adaptors. At least the ACE will charge when connected to the USB port of a computer.
On the back of the ACE there is a 1.3 MP camera/camcorder (sans flash), speaker, and removable, replaceable battery. An additional extended battery is available as an optional accessory.

Windows mobile and sprint applications
The Sprint/Samsung ACE ships with the Windows Mobile 6 Standard OS and software suite built in and ready to use. The applications include Mobile Outlook (Calendar, Contacts, Messaging/Inbox), Mobile Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint), Media Player Mobile, Pictures & Videos, complete description of this software is found in the At A Glance section of the magazine on page 78. In addition, the ACE comes with Sprint’s Power Vision applications a great addition to the device that includes Sprint TV. This gives you news, sports, weather, and entertainment, including full TV episodes at an additional cost. Other Power Vision features give users access to news headlines, sports scores, and much more on the fly. The ACE’s crisp, bright screen and high-speed EVDO network give viewers a worthwhile media experience. In addition, software can be downloaded directly to the ACE by clicking the “Sprint Software Store” icon which links to Handmark’s mobile Web store. Customers can find, download, and buy software, games, ring tones, graphics, and other Windows Mobile applications simply and securely. Additional titles are available for the desktop PC at softwarestore.sprint.com. Wireless e-mail is available from multiple corporate and personal e-mail accounts, including POP3 and IMAP. Users can also set up wireless access to Microsoft Outlook e-mail with a direct connection to Microsoft Exchange Server 2003. File Viewer allows viewing of MS Word, Excel, and PowerPoint documents. The Text Messaging Enabled feature allows you to send and receive text
messages across the room or across the country.

Should it be your AcE?
If you need a world phone with high-speed data while in the States, and you are looking for a solid, sleek smartphone, the ACE may just be your perfect upgrade. While partial to touch screen devices, this is the first Windows Mobile Standard device I have used that is truly a one-handed device. New Techology in Windows Mobile

Microsoft has announced plans to collaborate with RFID vendor Sirit
to implement near field communications (NFC) to Windows Mobile.
This “proximity technology” will provide “contactless” payment, secure
access, control of home entertainment systems, and other features
to Windows Mobile devices. NFC technology is already used widely in
Japan, where commuters can purchase train tickets or pay for parking
by waving their phones in front of sensors. A report on NFC conducted
by ABI Research projects that 30 percent of all phones worldwide will
incorporate NFC technology by 2011.

Buying a cell phone is more than a matter of choosing a handset--you also have to pick a service provider, or carrier, as well. Each carrier in the United States offers s different selection of technologies and services, so it's important to think about your needs when making a choice. For that reason, selecting a carrier should be the first step in the cell phone buying process.

Twisting technology

Wireless carriers in the United States operate over two different networks: Code Division Multiple Access (CDMA) and Global System for Mobile Communication (GSM). Though each technology transmits voice and data, they do so in different ways, which makes them incompatible. As a result, you can't take a CDMA phone and use it on GSM or vice versa.
Of the U.S. carriers, AT&T (formerly Cingular) and T-Mobile use GSM while Sprint, Verizon, and smaller carriers such as Alltel and U.S. Cellular use CDMA. Though Nextel is now part of Sprint, Nextel-branded phones use a third technology called iDEN, or Integrated Digital Enhanced Network.

Each technology offers distinct advantages. Generally speaking, CDMA coverage is more widespread in the United States, especially in rural areas (though this won't be true forever), and many argue that CDMA offers better voice quality. On the other hand, GSM service has a larger global footprint (it's the standard in Europe, for example) and GSM phones use the convenient SIM cards, which you allow you to, among other things, switch phones more easily. Also, when taken on a global scale, GSM users will find a wider selection of handsets.

With that in mind, if you travel overseas frequently or you enjoy switching out your phone often for the newest model available, then GSM is the better choice. Not all GSM phones will work overseas, however, so be sure to read CNET's Quick guide to world phones. But if you'll be making calls mostly in the United States or you're eager for a choice of 3G services (see CNET's Quick guide to 3G for more information), then CDMA is an equally good option. What's more, some CDMA phones now also support GSM networks for international use.
Besides technology, there are other factors that should play in your carrier decision. You should begin by deciding which carrier has the most economical service plans and the most attractive selection of phones. The quality of customer service is another determinant, but that can be difficult to evaluate beforehand. Since knowing the pros and cons of each operator isn't easy, we invite you to take a closer look at service providers in our Carrier comparison section. Besides the major operators, you might also consider MVNO carriers that cater to a special demographic or lifestyle. For example, Helio and Virgin Mobile are targeted toward younger users while Boost Mobile is centered on urban users who want advanced features.

Standing Laptop for Traveler : Aviator

Frequent travelers, especially those traveling for business, are almost certain to carry laptop computers with them these days. In fact, Keynamics claims that a staggering 92 percent of business travelers carry laptops on airline flights, and with recently approved plans to offer inflight broadband Internet service, there’s even more incentive to get the laptop out and use it during the flight.

There’s just one problem: airline seats and tray tables, especially in economy class, are awfully cramped and inhospitable to the laptop computer.

Enter the Keynamics Aviator Laptop Stand, the second product from the company that brought the laptop world the brilliant but awkwardly named Laptop Stand on Wheels.

The Aviator is a three-piece plastic and rubber affair that fits together in two configurations: flat for packing and locked upright as a stand for computing. Its ability to collapse into a flat package makes for easy transport: just slide it into a side pocket in your computer case and you’re all set.

As a stand, the Aviator works fairly well. In fact, it might be the most versatile stand I’ve used, a jack of many trades and master of one in particular: nothing beats it for use on an airliner’s tray table. Perhaps the closest overall competitor is the CoolPad line from RoadTools, but the Aviator beats both the CoolPads hands down when it comes to computing in a cramped airplane seat.

The Aviator really gets the laptop at a comfortable, elbows-in typing angle, which is important if you get stuck in a middle seat in coach with well-fed seatmates on either side, as seems to be the case so often these days. Even if you’re in a window or aisle seat, or lucky enough to be in business or first class, the Aviator really improves the typing experience. The relative position of most airline tray tables really lends itself to the Aviator’s overhanging stance, and about the only way airborne computing could get more comfortable is if you had an actual desk to use.

According to Keynamics, the angle and offset positioning offer protection from a sudden reclining of the seat in front of you. I can’t attest to the severity of this perceived hazard, but the Aviator does seem to allow for less impact to the screen in such cases than might otherwise occur. Whether you’re using a stand or not, however, if the passenger in front of you reclines his seat, you’re pretty much done using your laptop unless your arms are disproportionately short, like a tyrannosaurus rex.

Keynamics also advertises the Aviator as a desk stand, a role in which it is competent, though not excellent. Like Keynamics’ dedicated desk stand, the Laptop Stand on Wheels, the Aviator hangs the laptop off the front edge of the desk at a very comfortable typing angle. It can also be used entirely on the desk, though some of its ergonomic benefit is lost if you choose to do so.

The only major drawback of the Aviator on a tray table—or on a desk—is its front retaining hooks, which prevent the laptop from experiencing a gravitational fatal attraction to the floor. Like those on the ill-designed Contour NoteRiser, they block the optical drive slot on many Mac laptops—the MacBook line, with its side-loading optical drive, is the major exception—but unlike the NoteRiser, the Aviator allows the laptop to be lifted easily to gain access. Most people don’t swap optical media in and out very often during a single flight, so this probably won’t bother you too much.

My final minor complaint is with the security of the assembly. The plastic seems robust and slides together easily, but it slides apart just as easily. This can cause the stand to fall apart if you pick it up from one side. This isn’t a big deal as long as you remember to use both hands when moving the Aviator and computer as a unit, but it would be nice if the stand could lock into its configuration or fit together more tightly.

There isn’t a lot of quality competition at the low end of the laptop-stand market, especially when it comes to portable or quasi-portable stands. The Aviator really, uh, “stands” out as an excellent value and a truly functional product with only minor flaws. It’s more portable than its competition and much more suited to inflight use. Keynamics has done it again.

"The 2009 BMW X6 isn't great on a racetrack. This thought occurs during my third lap when I realize — the throttle wide open, exiting a corner at 100mph — this may not be the best sports car out there. My next thought is "But this is a 4,993lbs SUV." And that's the point where you realize what we have here is something entirely new.

BMW calls the X6 a Sports Activity Coupe. That seems preposterous given both their constant assertion that their best selling SUVs, the X3 and X5, be referred to as SAVs and the X6's four doors, which is 2 more than the unofficial definition of a coupe allows. The BMW X6 is based on that X5, its main difference, aside from the obvious low roof, swoopy bodywork and huge ass, is firm suspension and the addition of Dynamic Performance Control.

It's the latter that makes the X6 so special. Basically the cleverest rear differential in the world, DPC apportions power to the rear wheels independently to improve agility, stability and traction at all times. This matters to you and me because it makes the X6 handle incredibly well and incredibly safely in any condition without cutting power or hitting the brakes to interfere.

Combine DPC with Adaptive Drive, which eliminates roll and dive, and two incredibly powerful engines and you have a car that performs better than even the wildest imagination allows.

The first indication of the X6's genre-creating genius came with a tearing sound from the back end. Getting on the power in the middle of a wet and foggy hairpin in the Appalachian Mountains that sound suddenly joined the twin-turbo inline-six's deep growl as the level of grip began to beggar belief. It's the sound of the rear differential working hard to keep the X6 accelerating rather than spinning. GPS ON NOKIA N810 INTERNET TABLET

Nokia's Internet Tablet line has always suffered from a bit of an identity crisis. Though these mobile internet devices, or MIDs, mostly delivered on the promise of mobile Web browsing, their lack of PIM tools, lukewarm media playback, and inability to sync with PCs pretty much boxed them off from any mainstream appeal. With its built-in keyboard, enhanced Web browsing, much-improved user interface, and customizable,Linux-based Maemo platform, the $479 Nokia N810 is easily the company's best MID to date. Without question, this device offers a superb mobile Internet experience, but the absence of productivity tools and mobile broadband may drive away its prospective audience.

At 2.8x5x0.6 inches and 8 ounces, the sleek-looking, silver N810 feels more solid in the hand than its predecessor, the N800. Nokia carried over many of the N800's design staples, including the sprawling 4.1-inch, 800x480-resolution touch-screen display, built-in stereo speakers, 3.5-inch headphone jack, integrated VGA Webcam, and pop-out kickstand.

One of the biggest improvements is the N810's inclusion of a hardware keyboard. Where the N800 and N770 offered only the touch-screen variety, the N810 features a slide-out, backlit, full-QWERTY model. Compared to the bubble-shaped keys found on many smartphones, the N810's flat keys can be awkward to type on, and the overall spacing is a bit cramped. Still, anyone who has experience with a Blackberry should feel right at home with this setup.

The N810 does have a few design quirks worth noting. For one, the device does not accept standard SD cards—only the smaller miniSD variety (or microSD with an adapter). Nokia also did away with the N800's dual external and internal media card slots, opting instead for a single slot on the bottom of the N810. Another quibble: In place of the N800's rotatable Webcam, the N810 has an embedded fixed lens on its face. This change shouldn't affect video Web conferencing (just prop the device up on its kickstand and shoot), but to take pictures, you have to flip the N810 around and snap shots blindly—not an ideal solution.

Though the N810 won't dethrone the iPod Touch in the looks department, it does give Apple a run for its money in terms of user interface. The N810 operates on the latest upgrade to its custom Maemo operating system, OS 2008. The platform is Linux-based, which may frighten and perplex some users, but rest assured, the user interface will satisfy Linux lovers and ordinary folks alike. On the left side of the screen, you have Web, Chat, and Application icons. Clicking on these icons will bring up a menu with several options (clicking Web allows you to open a new browser or select from bookmarks, for example). Along the top toolbar are icons for Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, battery, sound and brightness (a GPS icon will also appear when the radio is in use). The home screen offers far more customization than the previous OS 2007. Using the home menu, you can alter your wallpaper and set various interfaces (like a Google search bar or a media controller) that can be dragged around the screen.

Clicking on the Application Launcher icon will bring up a list of pre-installed programs, including Skype, Rhapsody, WayFarer GPS navigation, games like Mahjong and Marbles, Media Player, PDF reader, and more. To add even more software, you can browse downloadable applications with the Application Manager. Some of our favorites include SCUMMVM, a PC game emulator; mplayer for DivX video playback; and Pidgin (formerly GAIM), an incredibly robust, multiservice instant messaging client. Average users who prefer to have just a few do-it-all applications will likely be overwhelmed by the dizzying number of options available on the N810 (for these users, we recommend the iPod Touch), but techies who delight in learning and tweaking new apps and programs will love the N810's platform.

Simply put, Web browsing on the N810 is a joy. The Maemo team took extra care in implementing OS 2008's Web capabilities, providing increased support for AJAX, Java, and Flash. In our tests, Web pages loaded quickly using the N810's 802.11 b/g Wi-Fi connection, and most formatted perfectly. The browser also did a superb job loading a variety of Web apps, including AJAX-based Google Mail, Docs and Maps; streaming video on YouTube and Break.com; music-streaming with last.fm; instant messaging apps like Meebo.com; and Myspace and Facebook social networking sites. The browser also handled Java and Flash admirably, although some sites, like Yahoo's new Java-based Mail client and the Slacker music streamer, failed to load properly.

In addition to its excellent Web browser, the N810 offers a number of standalone applications for Internet-based communication. The default Chat application works as advertised, although you can only use it to access your Google Talk, Jabber, and SIP instant messaging accounts. (For IM, Pidgin is a far superior alternative, as it syncs with AIM, Bonjour, ICQ, IRC, MSN and more.) The N810's e-mail client is barebones and suffers from slowdown with IMAP e-mail accounts, as did previous versions. (Unfortunately, we couldn't track down a better alternative.) In our tests, we were able to initiate and receive crystal clear Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) calls using Skype, though as of press time, Skype had not implemented video conferencing for the N810, a glaring omission we hope will be added soon. We also wish that Nokia had included a built-in WWAN radio for tapping into Verizon or Sprint's EV-DO mobile broadband network, or the even-speedier High-Speed Downlink Packet Access (HSDPA) protocol, so users can check e-mail and browse the Web in the absence of a Wi-Fi signal.

The bundled WayFarer GPS software was mostly on par with what you would get in a standalone GPS unit from Mio or TomTom. Our one complaint with the software was that it doesn't give you many reroute options other than selecting the shortest/fastest route and rearranging the order of the roads you were taking. Another downer: the GPS receiver took up to 10 minutes to lock onto a satellite signal each time we tried using it. The biggest catch, though, is the extra price: you have to cough up $129.99 for a three-year license in order to use the GPS software past its seven-day trial. If you don't want to spend the money, you can use a free Maemo Mapper download, although in our experience, that app is functional but extremely stripped down. It's also hamstrung in that you need to have Wi-Fi access in order to download route data when punching in your destination. In short, the N810 isn't meant to replace your standalone GPS device, but it could be a neat add-on for other applications like GPS tagging of your photos.

Media playback on the N810 was iffy. Nokia's default media player supports a good mix of audio formats, including MP3, WMA, AAC, AMR, AWB, M4A, MP2, RA (RealAudio), and WAV. The integrated stereo speakers sounded crisp and powerful, as did our wired headphones plugged into the standard jack. (You can't currently use your stereo Bluetooth headphones to listen to music.) The N810 also has a built-in Rhapsody app for streaming music and downloading album art from the Web. Playlist support was decent, although we found the media player playlist editor very unintuitive.

As for video, the N810 supports even more file types than the top portable video players (PVPs) we've seen, like the Archos 605 WiFi. The device can play back 3GP, AVI, WMV, MP4, H.263, H.264, MPEG-1, MPEG-4, RV (RealVideo). In testing, however, we found some videos, particularly DivX, Xvid and H.264 encoded files, suffered severe stutter, either both windowed and full-screen mode, while others would not play at all on the included media player. Luckily, having access to other applications offers versatility in how you play your video, though it's too bad that there isn't one solution that works for everything.

The one area that Nokia apparently completely overlooked on the N810 is productivity. The big criticisms with the N770 and N800 were their lack of PIM applications, and the N810 unfortunately follows in that trend. The device eschews indispensable tools like a calendar, scheduler, document editor, and spreadsheet viewer—apps that, in addition to their convenience for business users, would make great use of the device's spacious screen. You do get a PDF reader and the aforementioned e-mail client, but beyond that, corporate types are pretty much out of luck until a Linux guru ports the OpenOffice suite over to Maemo.

This omission is truly a shame considering that, since the N810 performs so well as an Internet portal, the right PIM tools would likely make it a road warrior's dream. That said, it's understandable that, given the recent trend toward Web-based programs like Google Apps, Nokia's development team focused more on OS 2008's Web performance instead of adding productivity apps. But until Google really nails its online productivity suite, we're aching for the Linux community to come up with a downloadable productivity solution for the N810.

In the end, like its predecessors, the N810 still lacks the productivity prowess and wireless broadband support it needs to attract business users. And considering its $479 price, we expect features like the device's integrated camera, video playback, and GPS to work better than what we saw in our tests. But overall, we're very impressed with this Mobile Internet Device. Its upgraded Web browsing capabilities, customizable development platform, and hardware keyboard make it a solid choice for techies that can't bear to leave the Web at home.

New Research For Identity Liver Cancer

Deadly and difficult to treat, liver cancer has long resisted attempts by researchers to develop ways to prolong life and prevent recurrence. But Mayo Clinic Cancer Center, in collaboration with the National Cancer Institute, reports in the April issue of Hepatology that the protein sulfatase 2 (SULF2) may provide one of the keys needed to begin the design of new therapies.

Mayo Clinic Cancer Center leads the field in researching the impact and effect of SULF1, a protein whose normal role is to degrade heparin sulfate proteoglycans -- molecules that are part sugar and part protein. Mayo scientists have found that the protein also helps inhibit tumor growth. Now, Mayo researchers are studying a related gene, SULF2. The role of the SULF2 gene and protein has not been fully defined, but in this study, researchers investigated the effect of SULF2 on liver tumor growth in the laboratory. They found that increased expression of SULF2 enhances cancer cell growth and migration, whereas decreased expression reduces both.

"The liver is designed to excrete toxins, and its tumors are no exception," says Mayo Clinic gastroenterologist Lewis Roberts, M.B.Ch.B., Ph.D., the study's primary investigator. "Our problem is that the tumors tend to excrete chemotherapeutic agents rather than be affected by them. So we are looking for ways to get around that."

The researchers sought answers by examining a protein related to one they already knew had a role in suppressing liver tumors. SULF1 and SULF2 are similar proteins, but cause opposing results. SULF1 removes sulfate groups that allow growth factors to bind to cells, thus inhibiting growth. The investigators found that SULF2 did the opposite -- it increased binding of a specific growth factor, fibroblast growth factor 2 (FGF2), to tumor cells, and also increased expression of the heparan sulfate proteoglycan glypican 3 (GPC3), which plays an important role in cell division and growth. These findings were confirmed in mouse models.

This discovery indicates if scientists can decrease the levels or activity of SULF2 in a tumor, they might be able to stop its development. Mayo researchers are exploring use of an agent that mimics heparin and inhibits SULF2. They are also examining whether preventing heparin sulfate synthesis would inhibit tumor growth.

"If something has a very broad effect on signaling by growth factors, it may lead to an effective treatment," says Jinping Lai, M.D., Ph.D., a Mayo oncology researcher and the lead author of the study. "SULF2 has a number of characteristics that make it an attractive target, such as the fact that it is widely present in tumors. We are exploring a number of options with SULF2 as a focal point for treatment not only in liver cancer, but also in head and neck, pancreas, breast and other types of cancer."

The researchers hope to identify drugs that block SULF2, and seek to thoroughly understand the mechanisms involved, including the determination of what other growth signaling pathways are affected by SULF2. They are also looking further at GPC3 as a potential biomarker for liver cancer or as a possible therapeutic target.

In 2007, Dr. Lai presented information at the annual meeting of the American Association for Cancer Research on the role of SULF2 in survival of patients with head and neck cancer -- the first concrete link to survival of patients with a specific tumor type.

Fly-by-wire throttle linked to sequential port fuel injection? Probably some high-tech Japanese racerreplica. Anti-lock brakes? Maybe a European sport-tourer.

Actually, no. I'm talking about a Harley-Davidson Road King. Specifically, the 2008 FLHRSE4 Screamin' Eagle Road King, the latest version of this iconic model from Harley's Custom Vehicle Operations division.

Each year since 1999, the CVO division has been turning out limited-edition models showcasing the Motor Company's Screamin' Eagle performance parts, items from its huge accessory catalog, and special paint jobs.

For 2008, all four CVO models are powered by Harley's Twin Cam 110 engine, a 110-cubic-inch power plant with different heads and cams and other Screamin' Eagle parts. Bolt it all together and Harley says the 110 pumps out 115 foot-pounds of torque at 3,000 rpm (measured at the
crankshaft). Low-end torque doesn't get much lower-end than this. Just 2,000 rpm on the tach gets you 80 percent of maximum torque.

That Twin Cam 110 also gets a new finish for 2008, called "granite and chrome." The "granite" portion is a special gray paint with actual stainless steel flake in it. But the really big news for 2008 isn't the Twin Cam 110. It's the bits that make it go, and the parts that make the two touring CVO models stop.

First, let's look at the throttle. Instead of throttle cables controlling the fuel injection, an electronic sensor now tells the injectors what your throttle hand is doing on both the Road King and the Ultra Classic Electra Glide CVOs. At first glance, it may sound like added complication. Who needs fly-by-wire on a touring motorcycle?

Actually, it reduces complication, Harley's CVO engineers note. Both the Road King and Ultra Classic come with electronic cruise control, which works more seamlessly with the electronic throttle control than it did with the old throttle cables.

And, there's another advantage to electronic throttle control for a company known for styling. No cables means a cleaner look for the handlebar. The electronic wires run inside the handlebar.

The other big news is Harley's new ABS system, which is standard on the Road King and Ultra Classic CVOs and will be a $795 option on all regular Harley touring models and VRSC models for 2008. It's an all-new system for Harley, and some wet pavement during our one-day ride
provided some opportunity to prove that it works.

The Harley system maintains separate operation of front and rear brakes. Steel braided lines run unobtrusively from both master cylinders to a controller unit located under the right side panel, then back to the brake rotors. If the wheel sensors detect lockup, the control unit pulses the brakes up to seven times per second to prevent the wheels from locking up.

As with the throttle, Harley paid a lot of attention to the styling, as well as the performance. You have to look carefully, and know where to look, to see any visual evidence of the ABS system. Not only are the additional brake lines well hidden, but Harley also put great effort into making the wheel sensors unnoticeable.

"It's totally invisible and that was an important part of the system," said Harley Director of
Product Communications Paul James. The sensors operate using magnetically encoded rings in the wheel bearings. Harley showed us the parts to demonstrate how they work. The two metal rings look like thin spacers. I let them clamp together by magnetic force and turned one with my hand. The two rings "click" in steps as the magnetically encoded spots interact. That's what sends signals to the ABS control unit without the need for a big, external sensor that would detract from Harley's traditional styling. Looking at the wheel alone, there's no way to tell if the motorcycle has ABS or not.

We had one day to try the new CVOs while visiting some of Harley's production facilities in the Milwaukee area. In Wisconsin, most of the best backroads are the county roads designated with letters, not numbers, that meander through the countryside. Riding highways and local roads on our way to some of those letter roads, the additional power of the Twin Cam 110 is immediately apparent. Harley's charts show the torque curve staying above 100 foot-pounds until you're closing in on the rev limiter, and by then any normal rider will have notched up into the next gear and ridden that wave of low-end torque again.

Once we reach the letter-road curves, I get a reminder that this is a touring bike. The soft suspension that soaked up the uneven joints on the highway is now a bit vague in the turns. But that's a fair tradeoff for a motorcycle equipped with bags and a windshield and a sixth gear just made for the highway.

Switching between the Road King and the Dyna and Springer CVO models really drives home the difference made by the Road King's new features. Suddenly, throttle cables feel about as modern a form of gaining velocity as spurring a horse. The electronic throttle control on the Road King provides for a light but completely progressive throttle. The ABS brakes, which incorporate Brembo four-piston calipers front and rear, provide ample stopping power with a two-finger pull, unlike Harley brakes of the past that called for a full fist of effort.

Another change for the Road King and Ultra Classic CVOs is a "stabilizer system," essentially the same kind of cush drive that's been used in the V-Rod, that damps the driveline pulses that aren't already eliminated by the compensator in the primary. The 45-degree V-twin's vibrations still make themselves obvious at idle, but once underway, the Road King provides a smoother ride than all but a handful of touring motorcycles.

The CVO Road King offers a host of other features, including a leather saddle that incorporates an ostrich-hide pattern that's repeated in the leather covering of the hard-plastic saddlebags, a backrest for the passenger and a removable one for the rider, chrome wheels with wider tires, and other touches that separate the CVO from regular Harleys. But while ABS brakes and electronic throttle control and more power are all appreciated on the road, it's the paint job that will be the first thing to draw a crowd to a CVO model in the parking lot at your local bike night.

The paint jobs on CVO models go way beyond some different colors, and the Road King is a good example. Take a close look at the Twilight Blue and
Candy Cobalt with Ghost Flame graphics (left). The powder-coated frame and Twilight Blue on the tank look almost black until the sunlight makes the color pop. The Cobalt Blue on the tank and fenders is a partially translucent color that lets you see the flames that are actually a pattern ground into the metal of the tank or fender underneath. Hand-drawn pin-striping separates the colors. It's a level of detail that even many custom motorcycle builders couldn't replicate. And since the flame pattern is actually in the metal surface of the tank, no two Road Kings are exactly identical. Harley strictly controls replacement parts, so if you don't buy a CVO, you can't get these unique painted pieces and add them to your regular Road King.

From its signature massive chrome-covered headlight nacelle to its tombstone-shaped taillight, the CVO Road King provides all the style and attention to detail you'd expect for a limited-run model from a company known for its styling. "There's a lot of blood, sweat and tears -- and love -- that goes into creating these motorcycles," said Bill Davidson, director of motorcycle product development. "[The] Styling [Department] loves CVO because they get to go beyond what we normally do."

Of course there's a hefty price for the product of that blood, sweat, tears and love. You could buy a garage full of less exclusive motorcycles for price of an FLHRSE4 Road King.

The entire run of CVO Road Kings for 2008 will account for less than 1 percent of Harley's production. If you can muster the cash and have the desire for a factory custom that also sports some of the latest high-tech features, then maybe you're Harley CVO's kind of one-percenter. MSRP $29,290.00

When you think of luxury executive saloons, one car always comes to mind the BMW 5-series. A class leader since its inception, the 5-series remains a crucial car to BMW. With the current E60 5-series introduced back in 2004, BMW is preparing the sixth-generation model to be revealed in 2010.

It will be a tough job for the designers as well as the thousands of engineers working across BMW’s development centers to renew the current model, a car that already resides at the edge of the technical front line. The new design is critical for BMW’s design manager Adrian van Hooydonk and his team, who have to create an exterior that radiates the brand’s distinctive design values and at the same time feels new and fresh. Using information from various sources, these renderings were compiled by our partners over at Sweden’s Auto Motor and Sport and their illustrator Radovan Varicak, giving us a preview of what the final version will look like.

The front-end will likely feature a more upright kidney grille in order to comply with stronger pedestrian protection laws, while the headlights won’t be stretched out like on the current model. BMW’s characteristic interaction between convex and concave shapes will still be emphasized, and will be clearly indicated in the engine hood’s lines. The rear roofline and C-pillar connects more fluidly to the trunk lid, which is now devoid of the Bangle-butt that was so universally derided with the E60 model. Parts of the tail-lights continue onto the trunk lid in order to strengthen the impression of width. We must say, this design is very pleasing and if BMW’s car looks anything like this, we sure it’ll lure back any customers loss to its rivals because of the controversial styling of the former E60.

The new 5-series is being built off an entirely new chassis, with double wishbones in the front, like on the new X5. The move is designed to give better control and road grip around corners, according to the chassis engineers. With the aid of the extremely fast Flex-Ray automotive network communications protocol, the adaptive shock absorbers is set to become more effective, as will active steering. BMW will also be updating its iDrive system for the new 5-series, making life a little easier with the addition of yet another pair of programmable buttons.

Those that think the standard 5-series isn’t sporty enough will have to wait for a few more years until the new M5 turns up with its V10 motor and more power than the 507hp offered in today’s edition. The M version will be the only 5-series model offered with a new dual clutch gearbox (similar to VW’s DSG technology). The standard version will instead be fitted with an 8-speed automatic transmission that will take the fight to Lexus. This gearbox is being developed by ZF, which will also manufacture a new four wheel drive system that will feature in the new Five. A new 5-series wouldn’t be complete without the introduction of more electronic driver’s aids, and this time BMW is bringing Dynamic Performance Control to the table. The system actively distributes torque between the wheels, depending on how the car acts during a turn. The result is increased security and the ability to handle larger side forces. The new differential will also come in the new 3-series and potentially even the 1-series as an option.

A full-hybrid system, featuring an electric motor in parallel with an engine, is not currently planned for the new 5-series, which instead is likely to feature the same system already used in the 1-series. This light-hybrid system consists of an electric starter motor that’s connected to the crankshaft and can function as both a generator and a propulsion system, spinning the engine during initial off the line acceleration. The light-hybrid will be available in both diesel and petrol versions and expect a new V8 diesel engine to make its debut in the next-gen model.
The two-mode hybrid transmission that was developed by BMW together with General Motors and DaimlerChrysler is mostly aimed at bigger vehicles such as trucks and SUVs. The design features dual motors, and an advanced control system that can allow both engines can be turned on simultaneously, and to regenerate electric power during braking.

This two-mode system, however, is not currently planned for the next generation 5-series, although BMW has not eliminated the possibility that a similar technology can be added towards the end of the model’s life cycle. We’ll have to make do with the light hybrid at the moment since BMW feels it has already succeeded in heavily reducing the fuel consumption of their engines. However, it remains to be seen whether or not BMW will be able to reach the EU’s new requirements for average CO2 emissions of 130g/km by 2012.

HP’s IPAQ hw6515 is an innovation in a communicator’s arena because of its slim casing. A communicator has never been so thin and sleek but its main attraction is not slimness but a thumbboard. The phone is totally opposite to what its predecessors looked like, iPAQ hw6300 series, with 118 x 71 x 21 millimeter casing and 165 grams weight you will doubt it of being a communicator. Bu this baby has all the qualities. Lets see the first thing that strike you is its 65K colour touch screen with its 240 x 240 pixel resolution, marking the very first Windows Mobile based device with a square screen to hit shelves. And have no doubt as it is bright, clear and with adequate ClearType performance. On the upper right corner of the casing place has been made for the power on/off button alongside to unobtrusive alert LEDs. Right below the screen there is a five-way navigational pad just flanked by dual-purpose, mappable hard and rather very small buttons for opening the contacts and e-mail applications. The only control which is easy operate to operate is volume up/down rocker far up on the left side of the phone but its that easy that you can switch it on accidentally. The communicator is also laced with a 1.3 Megapixel camera, 1,200 mAh Lithium Ion battery integrated GPS receiver, an 312 MHz Intel PXA270 processor backed up by 44 MB of volatile memory and 12 MB of non-volatile memory, EDGE.

02 Cocoon : THE AMAZING 3G STYLIST PHONE

The quad-band 3G Cocoon is not the first own-branded whiter than white handset I've seen from O2. That accolade went to the Ice. The Cocoon though, is a uniquely oddball mobile in several respects. It certainly looks different enough to be an eye catcher and apparently if you take your Cocoon to the O2 (formerly known as the Millennium Dome) in London, the phone knows what you are doing and will provide you with ‘exclusive content'.

O2's menu system is reasonably clear to follow. Up to eight shortcuts run along the bottom of the main screen and can be customised to show what you prefer, even pointing to individual browser bookmarks. The Cocoon can automatically change its wallpaper daily or hourly.

The Cocoon's curved white outer casing with its rounded top and bottom edges and black sides makes it look unlike any mobile I've ever seen. The casing is made of a plastic that has a semi rubbery feel that's quite nice in the hand, actually.

For all its unique looks the LED display is the real innovation of this handset. It has many functions. It can, for example tell you when you've got a text and show its first couple of words. It also shows who is trying to call you if they are in the device phone book, shows the time and provides battery low information. A series of five little icons light up when the LED is active to tell you if you've missed a call, got a voice message, switched to vibrate profile, set an alarm or need to recharge the battery.

They will most probably make use of a tracking company’s statistics that will tell them the mail was served and opened by a large amount of users. After the campaign they will spend days trying to understand why the response was so bad and try to fix the graphic. Little do they realize that the graphic was never viewed by the majority of users but the tracking script was loaded the instant they opened the mail, telling the tracking software the mail was indeed read. The fact however is that they would accomplish better results making use of a text mailer and then the tracking data would have also produced much more reliable information.

A further problem the marketer has to face is the huge amounts of misinformation the Internet is stacked with when doing research. The real information is misunderstood as it often contains confusing technical information, or unreliable because it contains non-substantiated facts.

Unless you can ride like Troy Bayliss, it will always be your ability that is being tested rather than the machine. And no, your R1, GSX-R, CBR or Ninja does not pull as hard as the Ducati 1098R. Not unless it has a race tuned engine in it. A healthy standard litre sportsbike may pull similar peak numbers on a dyno, but rest assured the riding experience simply can’t be compared with the staggering mid-range grunt off the turns that the 1098R dishes out with a very big spade.

The first year is the hardest to get through. The common pay structure is commission only. There are a few brokers who will pay you a salary plus bonuses, but if you really want to serious money from this industry then you will want to work for commission only. If the first year 85% of those who start out in this business will drop out for what ever reason. That leaves only 15% who make it through their first year. Now remember that statistics are just that, numbers that are about averages. It can fluctuate up and down but this is a conservative statistic. Out of those 15% who stick it out their first year, 93% of those will become or have made a million dollars in about 5 years through hard smart work and determination along with their growing of experience and learning the trends of this industry.

My first paycheck in this business was $2,333.67. That was for a total of 4 hours worth of work from origination to funding of the home loan. That got me hooked. If I only did two loans a month I could average $4,000.00 per month respectively. Not bad for a grand total of eight hours worth of work. The only thing that you have to get past in this business is the waiting period for the loan to fund. This can take up to 30 days in some cases, but once you get a good "pipeline" going the checks will come in on a consistant basis.

There are many, many brokerage firms out there that offer many different ways to get paid. I can show you what you should be started out at with commission, what the standard comp pay is and what to look for in a mortgage broker company.

If you advertise with adwords you have probably realised that with recent changes to their system, the crowd at google have made it very difficult to maintain a profitable adwords campaign. This applies to those promoting other peoples products or their own.

The way I used to create a keyword list for my campaigns was to use the adwords sandbox to enter a bunch of keywords that were relevant to my market and just add whatever words it spat out at me.

It took me a while but I realized eventually that this wasn't the best way to go about it. Many of my keywords would become inactive and the ones that remained were ranked 17.2 and not seeing a lot of action at all.

It annoyed me because as you probably know, on the adwords traffic estimate screen you always seem to get a number of clicks that excites you but when you actually put up the campaign the results you see are much different. Also I was always limited by the number of related keywords I could think up in my own head. I knew about the power of 'backdoor' keywords but couldn't think up enough of them up to create a profitable campaign!

The point it changed is when I found a piece of software that could I could use to see the bid results for large numbers of keywords at once so I could tell immediately which keywords were going to be the most profitable to use in my campaigns and which ones I shouldn't bother with.

Not only that but this same piece of software will actually find for me the backdoor keywords that are generally less competitive and super valuable for an adwords advertiser.

With this software I first find a market and a product I want to promote then find a website about this product... I then insert this URL into the software and it will scan all the words on the page and use certain technologies to tell me all other keywords related to that keyword that I would never have thought of!

The result? More keywords, more backdoor and hence more profitable keywords and a lower cost, potentially higher conversion ad campaign!

Iklan yg tidak relevan akan menurunkan potensi kesuksesan, jadi seperti halnya publisher bekerja utk menentukan desain dan penempatan iklan, mereka juga seharusnya memastikan bahwa iklan yg mereka pasang akan relevan dan berada sedekat dengan content.

Setiap sistem iklan memiliki metode berbeda dalam memperoleh iklan yg relevan. Sistem seperti Chitika, memerlukan beberapa pekerjaan dan anda harus memilih keyword secara hati-hati.Sedangkan Adsense dan YPN lebih menjurus kepada apa yg anda tulis daripada yg lainnya, karena mereka bersifat kontekstual. Keyword dalam Content - Perlu dipertimbangkan kata2 apa yg akan anda munculkan lebih banyak daripada yg lainnya, karena ini akan memicu relevansi iklan anda. Utk membantu supaya iklan Adsense keluar, anda harus menemukan cara utk menggunakan/ menulis target keyword di postingan anda sekali atau 2 kali.

Keyword dalam judul - Keyword dalam judul kelihatannya memiliki pengaruh yg besar terhadap iklan yg akan muncul. Terutama jika judul postingan anda adalah judul halaman. Periksa sidebar, header, footer dan menu - Jika anda tidak menggunakan Section Targeting (dan mem-bok sidebar agar tidak terbaca oleh Adsense dan digunakan sebagai dasar iklan anda), anda perlu memikirkan kata2 yang akan anda pasang di sidebar dan menu. Salah satu problem umum yg dihadapi oleh para blogger adalah mereka mendapat iklan yg berhubungan dengan "blogging" meskipun mereka menulis topik yg berbeda. Alasan umum dari hal ini adalah adanya kata2 "blog" atau "blogging" pada beberapa tempat di sidebar. Kecuali blog anda adalah tentang blogging, anda sebaiknya menghindari pemakaian kata2 "blog" atau"blogging" sebisa mungkin. Kata2 yg diulangi beberapa kali di bagian sidebar mungkin akan mempengaruhi keyword density blog anda.

Tetap posting menggunakan satu topik saja - Semakin fokus postingan anda, semakin banyak petunjuk yg anda berikan pada Adsense tentang apa yg anda tulis. Postingan yg meng-cover beberapa topik, menyebabkan iklan menjadi tidak fokus. Ini menjelaskan mengapa terkadang sulit mendapatkan iklan yg relevan pada halaman utama. Anda harus memperbaiki keyword density pada halaman utama anda, jika menemuai kasus seperti ini.

Jaga agar blog/ url anda terfokus pada 1 topik - Beberapa publisher Adsense percaya bahwa Adsense tidak hanya melihat halaman yg berisi iklan saja, tetapi keseluruhan suatu site. Sy yakin bahwa anda tidak akan mendapat iklan yg relevan jika anda menulis beberapa topik dalam satu url - begitu pula sebaliknya - akan sangat membantu jika seluruh url membahas tentang satu topik ( hal ini tidaklah mendasar - tetapi termasuk faktor yg patut dipertimbangkan dalam strategi blogging anda).

Periksa apakah iklan Adsense anda ada/ tidak - Hal ini jarang terjadi pada Adsense, karena inventori mereka sangat besar dan luas (kecuali jika anda menggunakan bahasa Indonesia - karena masih sedikit orang Indo yg beriklan menggunakan Adsense dibandingkan orang2 luar). Sulit utk menge-cek hal ini, tapi salah satu caranya adalah buka Google.com dan cari keyword yg anda pakai, jika ada iklan pada halaman hasil pencarian, itu berarti anda memiliki kesempatan. Jika tidak - anda harus memperluas topik blog anda.

Periksa Iklan apa yg terlihat oleh pembaca anda - Iklan yg anda lihat di blog anda mungkin saja akan berbeda dengan yg terlihat oleh pembaca anda.Hal ini terutama dikarenakan iklan2 menggunakan target lokasi bagi pembaca anda. Akibatnya tempat anda mungkin hanya memiliki sedikit iklan yg relevan dibandingkan dengan daerah lain dan sebaiknya tanyakan pada orang lain yg berada di luar daerah anda utk memberitahu anda, iklan apa yg terlihat pada blog anda.

Blok Iklan yg tidak relevan - Tips ini adalah salah satu jalan terakhir dan mungkin tidak banyak berpengaruh secara keseluruhan. Adsense mengijinkan publisher utk memblok sebuah iklan melalui Competitive Ad Filter. Jika anda melihat iklan yg tidak relevan dengan topik blog, segera lakukan block. Tentu saja harap diingat bahwa iklan yg muncul adalah spesifik terhadap lokasi anda dan mungkin pembaca anda akan melihat iklan yg berbeda - jadi melakukan block terhadap suatu iklan, merupakan suatu pekerjaan yg kurang efektif.

Relevansi Iklan memerlukan waktu - Jika blog anda masih baru dan mendapat iklan yg tidak relevan, maka itu mungkin blog anda masih kurang "berumur". Beberapa blog mendapat iklan yg bagus setelah seminggu atau 2 minggu. Jadi berilah sedikit waktu bagi iklan anda melakukan tugasnya.
